The Purpose of Life According to Jesus

The Purpose of Life According to Jesus

While not His final words, or even His final prayer, I consider Jesus's High Priestly Prayer to be His ultimate teaching.

After saying this, Jesus raised his eyes heavenwards, and said:

“Father, the hour has come; honor your Son, so that your Son may honor you; even as you gave him power over all humanity, so that he should give eternal life to everyone you have given him. And the eternal life is this – to know you the one true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent as your messenger.

“I have honored you on earth by completing the work which you have given me to do; and now do you honor me, Father, at your own side, with the honor which I had at your side before the world began. I have revealed you to those whom you gave me from the world; they were your own, and you gave them to me; and they have laid your message to heart. They recognize now that everything that you gave me was from you; for I have given them the teaching which you gave me, and they received it, and clearly understood that I came from you, and they believed that you have sent me as your messenger.

“I intercede for them; I am not interceding for the world, but for those whom you have given me, for they are your own – All that is mine is yours, and all that is yours is mine – and I am honored in them. Now I am to be in this world no longer, but they are still to be in the world, and I am to come to you.

“Holy Father, keep them by that revelation of your name which you have given me, so that they may be one, as we are. While I was with them, I kept them by that revelation, and I have guarded them; and not one of them has been lost, except that lost soul – in fulfillment of scripture. But now I am to come to you; and I am speaking like this, while still in the world, so that they may have my own joy, in all its fullness, in their hearts.

“I have given them your message; and the world hated them, because they do not belong to the world, even as I do not belong to the world. I do not ask you to take them out of the world, but to keep them from evil. They do not belong to the world, even as I do not belong to the world. Consecrate them by the truth; your message is truth. Just as you have sent me as your messenger to the world, so I send them as my messengers to the world. And it is for their sakes that I am consecrating myself, so that they also may be truly consecrated.

“But it is not only for them that I am interceding, but also for those who believe in me through their message, that they all may be one – that as you, Father, are in union with us – and so the world may believe that you have sent me as your messenger. I have given them the honor which you have given me, so that they may be one as we are one – I in union with them and you with me – so that they may be perfected in their union, and so that the world may know that you have sent me as your messenger, and that you have loved them as you have loved me.

“Father, my desire for all those whom you have given me is that they may be with me where I am, so that they may see the honor which you have given me; for you did love me before the beginning of the world. Righteous Father, though the world did not know you, I knew you; and these people knew that you have sent me as your messenger. I have made you known to them, and will do so still; that the love that you have had for me may be in their hearts, and that I may be in them also.”

John 17 (OEB) (paragraph breaks my own)

Commentary

Right away, in the opening of Jesus's prayer, He says something a little strange. He says He has power over all humanity so that He can provide eternal life. All sounds good so far. But then Jesus defines 'eternal life'.

“etenal life is this - to know you the one true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent as your messenger.”

John 17:3 (OEB)

Normally, eternal life is depicted as well, eternal life. Here, instead, Jesus defines eternal life as knowing Himself and the Father.

Jesus continues His prayer by praising His followers for understanding the message that He has given them.
He continues by interceding on their behalf that they would be cared for in His absence. He prays that they would be one with the Father just as He is one with the Father so that they may have the same joy that He has.

Jesus then recognizes that His followers will be hated by the world because of His message. The message He has given them sets them at odds with the systems of the world. Jesus prays that they would be kept from the evils of the world as they are sent out into it to spread His message, the message of God.

Jesus continues by including in his intercession, all of His future followers who come by hearing and believing the message that his current followers will hand down. Jesus prays that not only would His current followers be one with the Father, but that everyone who comes to hear and believe his message would be one with the Father. That includes us. Jesus gives us the honor of being one with Him and the Father. It is in being one with Christ and the Father, that we truly know God's love.

Jesus concludes His prayer by stating His desire that His followers would know the love of the Father.

The Purpose of Life

There is a lot that can be taken away from this powerful prayer. Today I want to zero in on what I find to be the main focus, oneness with God.

Jesus prays that we would be one with Him and the Father, and in doing so, fully know the love of the Father.

I believe that the whole goal of Christian life is to be one with God.
While I haven't found this idea to have much prominence in the Protestant tradition, the Orthodox and Catholic traditions each have a specific word for becoming one with God: 'theosis' and 'divination' respectively.

So, if becoming one with God is the goal, how do we go about it?

It's quite simple really. We already are.

Either God answered His Son's prayer, or He didn't.

So, you already are one with God. Simply open your eyes and see.

God is love. Nothing can separate you from the love of the Father (Romans 8:37-39). Therefore, nothing can stop you from being the fulfillment of Jesus's prayer. Nothing can stop you from being one with God.
Be still and know that you are one with God.

You are Love.
