My Pig Made Some New Friends
I stepped out my back door.
All was quiet.
Too quiet.
I turned to see the gate sitting wide open.
Then it hit me.
The pigs are gone.
Let me first back up.
I have two pet pigs.
I'm a cat person.
My wife is a dog person.
We compromised and got pigs.
Yes, that's plural.
Pigs are social creatures. So, if you can't spend 100% of your time with it, you need some other creature to keep them company.
So we got two.
Sir Wigglesworth and Lady Sugarplump.
Brother and sister.
Tonight, they got out.
I forgot to check if the gate was latched when I let them out. If it's not super secured, they can simply push with a little force and it will pop open.
It's not fun roaming my neighborhood at night, banging food dishes together.
Multiple rounds and nothing.
My wife went out then carrying our daughter. Our daughter was getting cold, so my wife decided to head back. When she got back, she found SIR Wigglesworth nearly right outside our house. She got him inside pretty easily.
One piggy came home.
We were still missing Lady.
I went back out, bundled up better and this time armed with a flashlight.
I walked down the road a bit, calling for Lady and banging her food dish.
Then I hear a grunt.
I look and there she is coming to greet me!
I found her!
I get her to follow me. An easy task while I'm holding food.
My cousin comes out of his house to help the search.
They live right on my road, about five houses down.
He helps me guide her back home, keeping her from straying into the street.
We get her home and all is well!
Both pigs are safe and sound back home in our basement, all snug and cozy.
Then we hear a knock on our door.
It's our neighbor behind us coming to let us know our pis are out. He had a photo from the neighborhood Facebook page. We say thanks and that we've already found them, and life moves on. Then our next door neighbor texts us the picture.
This is not the first I'm seeing the photo.
It turns out, Lady Sugarplump went (likely though people's yards) to the other side of the block, showed up on someone's porch and said hello.
She escaped and then went to make new friends.

Get pigs, we said.
We have some pieces of Lady's adventure.
It's still unknown what all Wiggles did while out and about.
Either way, I'm just glad they made it home safe.
Pets getting out is one of the most nerve racking things that's happened to me in a while. I do not wish it on anyone.
